Instagram has been part of my photography strategy for a few months now, and I’ve been watching reactions there and wondering which picture would claim the title of most likes in 2020.
Here are larger, non-square versions of my top four pictures on Instagram at this writing.
#4. Maple leaves. This was one of the last fall photos I got this year. They still had some great color and the evening light was really making them pop against the dark woods in the background.

#3. Last leaves of autumn. I took this photo at dusk after almost everything had fallen. I went out expecting to take macros of leaves on the ground or to take pictures of bare branches, not landscape, but there it was. A few trees clinging to their leaves.

#2. This is the first snow of winter. It was heavy, wet, and sticking to everything. Branches were breaking and falling regularly while I was out taking this. I only tried three different subjects before I packed it in. I was worried about getting hit on the head — or worse soaking my camera!

#1. Here it is, my most popular picture on Instagram so far, still kind of square, but a different crop that shows more of the reflection. It’s a reflection of a tree in leaf-filled water.
